The Origin of Spanish Tapas: A Delicious Journey Through History

During the reign of the Catholic Kings in Spain, due to an increase of incidents caused by taverns because of the large amount of beer and ingested wine, the bartenders were forced to serve the cup of wine or beer mug with a lid. This consisted of a plate with some cold food, such as ham, cheese, or whatever came to hand the bartender. Customers must first end the meal to remove the cover and so drink the wine or beer. This measure sought to end of road incidents, ensuring that taverns leave the least drunken possible.
